Babbitt By: Sinclair Lewis Historical/ political fiction (I haven't the faintest idea what the reading level is. I didn't bother to look) 1
George Babbitt is a realitor in the lovely city of Zenith. He lives in the happy high-middle class of society in the 1930's, but he's sure he's moving up in society. This book was absolute garbage. Even when looking into all the social comments (which I did) this book still sucks. Sinclair has this horrible habbit of writting about the extremely boring bits of his book forever and then skipping over anything that could be slightly entertaining. The characters, although unforgettable, are unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. There is little plot and by the time you actually get to any plot moving points you simply don't care any more. I know that I threw this book across the room on more than one occassion in seething hatred. Don't even get me started on Lewis' (for want of a better word) arrogant attitude towards business of any kind, suggesting that any one who's ever achieved anything did it by lying, cheating, stealing or whatever other means necessary. The boring, hypocritical character of Babbitt is given as the character of every business man in the world. Excluding all books with grammitcal errors and what not, this is possibly the worst book I've ever read.
